Katana - Tsuguhiro - NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Certificate - Uchigatana/Shirasaya Koshirae - Suriage Nakago - Koto Era

Sekishu Tsugehiro is highly regarded among the fourth generation of smiths stemming from Sekishu Naotsuna. Naotsuna, under the direct tutelage of Masamune, is remembered as the most renowned among Masamune's ten great desciples. Tsugihiro would continue to be active until the fifth generation during Tenbun era. This sword is the work of Tsugihiro the fifth and is in excellent condition.

It is tight itame hada with mokume mixed in places and the chikei is very active. Hoso-suguha hamon is elegant with some ko-midare mixed in. The boshi is shallowly curved with komaru. NBTHK has appraised this sword as Special Preservation Rank. The Koshirae fittings are also in excellent condition, especially tsukamaki, which is wrapped in black lacquer on thin leather in ikkan style, and the menuki is visible(dashi-menuki). The tsuba is a simple round namako-sukashi style and the tsuba craftsman's name, Shinryo, is engraved on it. The scabbard is lacquered in vermilion ishime-nuri, and is equipped with a kaerizuno and kuwagata type ojiri. The sashi ura is decorated with Ichimonji characters, making it a genuine Higo type of sheath. Due to its excellent state of preservation, the exterior fittings also have an NBTHK certificate of authenticity for its Preservation Rank.

It is hard to believe that nearly 500 years have passed since the sword was made, and the blade and koshirae are in such excellent condition that they are of high historical value.
